I have known many people who say they don’t like Germans, unable to forgive even the descendants of the people who allowed the holocaust to happen. Is that silly, or is it completely understandable, given the enormity of the crimes against humanity committed by that nation

ASK YOURSELF: Do you believe that the people of a nation are accountable for the atrocities committed by their leaders in their names

IF YES: Are you okay with the fact that the United States tortures so-called enemy combatants? Are you okay with the fact that our constitution, which gives this country its sense of moral authority, only applies to US Citizens, itself a designation subject to revocation by our government

IF NO: Are you okay with the fact that an estimated 100,000 Iraqi civilians have been killed because the US didn’t like their government? Are you okay with the fact that thousands of Afghani civilians (no organization has been able to accurately count) have been killed as a result of the armed conflict against The Taliban

ASK YOURSELF: Have you expressed your opinion to your government? If you haven’t contacted your Congressman or Senator because you don’t think they care, you should know that they haven’t done anything about it because they don’t think you care

Clearly in a democracy the people are responsible for the actions of their government. But is this still the case when elections are stolen? Or when the elected refuse to implement the will of the people because our system of government has become so perverted that corporations are now the only constituency Congress worries about?

Yet, even this being the case, we Americans share plenty of blame for not contacting our members of Congress, not protesting, not demanding impeachment and for, generally, burying our heads in the sand.

And because of this it is very difficult to distinguish our actions from that of the Germans 70 years ago. Torture is torture. Atrocities are atrocities. Murder of innocents is the murder of innocents. The only difference is the number of each and is that really any difference at all when it’s done in your name?
